2025 – Ayne Bru(n) and the Art of Stained Glass

Ayne Bru(n), from Brabant to the Mediterranean Basin: a Painter and the Art of Stained Glass

The Périer-d’Ieteren Foundation is pleased to announce its support for the postdoctoral research project of Elsa Espin (CY Cergy University, Paris). As part of this project, the laureate will be hosted in Brussels for a period of six months starting in September 2025.

The project focuses on Ayne Bru(n), a painter originally from Louvain and a major yet still little-studied figure of the early sixteenth century. Active mainly in Catalonia, the artist is best known for the altarpiece of Sant Cugat (1504–1507), two panels of which are now preserved at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (Barcelona).

Recent studies have shed light on a stage of his career in Provence at the end of the fifteenth century, as well as a probable contribution to the stained-glass windows of Albi Cathedral (Sainte-Cécile). Elsa Espin’s research aims to further investigate these discoveries and to explore in greater depth Ayne Bru(n)’s connections with stained-glass production in the Southern Netherlands.

Through this support, the Périer-d’Ieteren Foundation reaffirms its commitment to innovative research in art history and to the study of the circulation of artists and expertise during the Renaissance.
